Protest and funeral: Dharmendran’s family and friends staging a protest and mock funeral outside the police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
KUALA LUMPUR: A task force has been formed to investigate the death of N. Dharmendran, who is believed to have been murdered while in police custody.
City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said the task force would comprise officers from Bukit Aman.
Dharmendran, 32, was detained on May 12 along with three others after they were suspected to have been involved in the shooting of two men in Bandar Tun Razak.
This incident occurred about two weeks ago.
“Post-mortem results showed that the victim may have been murdered while in custody at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters,” he told a press conference. He said police would thoroughly investigate the matter from all angles.
However, DCP Mohmad declined to elaborate on the nature of Dharmendran's injuries.
The public and family members of the deceased have been urged not to speculate on the incident and to allow the police time to conduct a full investigation.
“I guarantee his family and the public that the police will handle this investigation transparently and will not defend any policemen who may have been involved in this incident,” he stressed.
DCP Mohmad said that Dharmendran had complained of chest pains at about 9pm on Tuesday and was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment. He died on arrival.
However, his family have disputed the story given by the police and their lawyer N. Surendran has demanded that the Home Ministry and police conduct a full inquiry into the death.
Surendran claimed that there were signs of bruises and staple marks on the victim's body.
Meanwhile, yesterday, about 30 of Dharmendran's family and friends collected his body from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
The funeral cortege stopped outside the city police headquarters where the deceased's family and friends staged a protest asking for justice over his death.
They also performed mock funeral rites at the entrance of the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters at about 2.50pm yesterday before taking the remains to be cremated.
