KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested three opposition figures under the Sedition Act while the Home Ministry seized some 3,000 copies of Opposition party organs as the authorities moved to put a stop to alleged attempts to overthrow the Government through street protests.

PKR vice-president Tian Chua, PAS member Tamrin Ghafar and head of the pro-Opposition group Anything But Umno Haris Ibrahim were arrested at three different locations yesterday, said City police chief Deputy Commisioner Datuk Mohmad Salleh.arrested-opposition-sedition-act

The three were arrested barely a day after student activist Adam Adli was released on bail pending charges under the Sedition Act.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said all quarters should take responsibility for statements and actions deemed offensive in the eyes of the law.

“The moment they open their mouth, they should be answerable for whatever they utter,” he said.

Following their arrest, the three were taken to the Jinjang police station to facilitate police investigations under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act over statements which they allegedly made during a forum on May 13 held at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

It was reported that during the forum, several pro-Pakatan groups including the trio had called for massive street rallies to topple the Government.

“We can detain a person for a maximum of 24 hours for questioning. If we need more time for our questioning and investigation, we will remand the three,” DCP Mohmad told a press conference yesterday.

It is learnt that the three are likely to spend the night at the Jinjang police station before being remanded today.

In a simultaneous move, the Home Ministry seized 1,408 copies of PKR's Suara Keadilan, 1,602 copies of PAS' Harakah and 70 copies of DAP's The Rocket nationwide for violating their publishing permit.

The ministry said the seizure was made under Section 5 of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 (Amendment) 2012 for breach of the print conditions.

One of the conditions is that the circulation of the publications is limited to party members, the ministry said in a statement.

It added: “The operation was carried out at premises selling the tabloids nationwide after taking into account the monitoring efforts and warning given by the ministry.

“It will be carried out continuously for the purpose of enforcing the Act and to ensure that all quarters do not violate it.”
