Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua (left) told reporters during a press conference outside of Dewan Rakyat today that this is based on a circular issued to the Malacca City mayor which contradicts Idris' statement.
According to the circular issued by the Malacca state executive council, the Jonker Walk must remain open to traffic hereafter, and not on a trial basis.
The circular also states that the hawkers there will no longer be allowed to set up stalls at any part of the road.
Pua also said that Idris' statement that the night market's closure was done in order to address traffic concerns was not "acceptable" because the chief minister had earlier been quoted by Kwong Mah Daily as saying that the market is being closed down because the people there had supported DAP and not MCA or BN.
"His is a nonsensical statement. This proves that this is a political action that was taken without considering the welfare of the rakyat," Pua said.
Traffic excuse 'not acceptable'
Meanwhile, fellow DAP MP Sim Tong Him also questioned the contradiction in Idris' statements with the circular that has been sent to mayor Zainal Abu.
"I have met both Idris and also Tourism Minister Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz this morning. Idris told me that the closure was only for four weeks and it is on a trial basis.
"But this circular says otherwise. The closure is permanent and the hawkers cannot do business.
"His statement that the closure is because of traffic cannot be accepted," the Kota Melaka MP said. Mkini
