Haze claims first victim, an asthmatic woman in Muar

The haze has been blamed for the death of an asthmatic woman in Muar.

The Sun newspaper reported that Li Cai Ling died on Sunday with the medical report blaming the polluted air.

A state of emergency was declared in Muar over the weekend after the API rose to a hazardous level of 750.

Pollution spiked to hazardous levels in some parts of the country in recent days, with southern Malaysia seeing its worst air quality in 16 years last weekend.

The pullution has eased over the last two days in Muar and other parts of southern Peninsular Malaysia as the haze has been pushed by southwestern winds blowing to the north. Central and northwestern areas are in its path, with certain parts of the Klang Valley and the East Coast now more affected. - June 26, 2013
