The Transport Ministry is expected to announce the new proposal for the vehicle registration plates for the Federal Territory following the impending expiry of the “WYY” series.

As at 5pm on Tuesday, the latest number for Kuala Lumpur-registered vehicle is WYK 4720.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad said the “WYY 9999” number is expected to come in about two months' time.

“The department has considered the best option to introduce the new numbering sequence, including taking into account various proposals.

“The announcement of the new car number plate will be announced by the Acting Transport Minister (Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein) when he visits the JPJ headquarters later this week,” he said yesterday.

Asked if the new system would incorporate either additional alphabets or numerical digits, such as what was done for Langkawi-registered cars and vehicles for certain districts in Sabah and Sarawak, Ismail said these were also being considered.jpj transport department

Under the present system, the vehicle registration plate number for Kuala Lumpur would end at “WYY 9999”.

Some 1.3 million new vehicles were registered with the department last year, with Kuala Lumpur recording the highest number of new vehicles totalling 359,239, followed by Johor with 172,608 vehicles and Penang with 113,340 vehicles.

Kuala Lumpur also tops the highest number of registered vehicles with 5.3 million followed by Johor with three million vehicles and Selangor with 2.4 million vehicles.

On average, some 1,100 new vehicle registrations are recorded daily in Kuala Lumpur, compared to about 500 in Johor and 300 in Selangor.

Meanwhile, Toyota car dealer Kenny Lee said his customers were unperturbed with the impending expiry of the Federal Territory number plate series.

He rubbished the notion that a vehicle's value would be better preserved if registered under Selangor compared to the fast-changing sequence of the Federal Territory numbers.

He claimed the value of a vehicle was dependent on the actual date of its registration rather than on a car's plate registration number.
