GEORGE TOWN: DAP stalwart and prominent lawyer Karpal Singh was killed in a road accident this morning when the car he was travelling in rammed into the side of a lorry at the North South Expressway.
He was 73.
Also killed in the 1.30am accident was his assistant C. Michael, while two others, his son, Ram Singh and an Indonesian maid were seriously injured.
Karpal leaves behind a wife, five children and four grandchildren.
Condolence messages and tributes have been flooding in ever since news of Karpal's sudden death broke out.
Lawyer Datuk V. Sithambaram remarked that Karpal's courage as a lawyer was unparalleled, and his passion for the law is hard to emulate.
Sithambaram noted that as Karpal's junior in many criminal cases, the latter taught him to be absolutely forthright to the court, adding that brevity in his submission in court was his hallmark.
"I feel the Malaysian Bar has lost a courageous member who stood to defend the Rule of Law at tremendous personal costs.
"Karpal has left this world but he will never leave our thoughts. His legacy will remain deeply entrenched in the legal and political arena," Sithambaram said.
Politicians from both sides of the divide took to the social networks to offer condolence messages to the Bukit Gelugor MP.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tweeted "Takziah untuk keluarga mendiang YB Karpal Singh. Semoga ahli keluarga tabah menghadapi dugaan ini" (Condolences to the family of YB Karpal Singh. May the family members stay strong in the face of this test).
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein also offered his condolences, tweeting "Deepest condolences to family of MP YB Karpal Singh on his passing. Thoughts & prayers r with you in these difficult moments @GobindSinghDeo".
"My heartfelt condolences to the family of YB Karpal Singh on his untimely demise", was the message tweeted by Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.
Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim tweeted "Perkhabaran sedih. Negara kehilangan tokoh politik & peguam yang berwibawa. Takziah kepada seluruh keluarga mendiang Karpal Singh." (Sad news. The country has lost a capable politician and lawyer. Condolences to the family of the late Karpal Singh).
Lembah Pantai member of parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar tweeted this, "Heartbreaking. Sincere condolences to the family members of our beloved @KarpalSinghDAP - prayers are with the family."
"We lost a national hero this morning, we will always remember the Tiger of Jelutong @KarpalSinghDAP", tweeted Serdang member of parliament Dr Ong Kian Ming.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek extended his condolences to family of Karpal Singh, describing the death as a big loss to the country's political arena.
"We are shocked and saddened by the news of the passing of Karpal Singh in an accident. It's an untimely death from an unfortunate event.
Despite his physical condition, he continued his political struggle to perfect the democratic values and principles of our nation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family," said Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow.
Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan also offered his condolence to families of Karpal Singh, expressing hope that they would remain strong throughout the difficult time.Malaysians from all walks of life also expressed their shock and sadness at Karpal's sudden passing.
Many remembered him for his contributions in his lengthy political career and as a lawyer as they mourned the passing of a great leader.
Born in Penang to an Indian Punjabi immigrant father, Karpal read law at the University of Singapore. He is one of Malaysia's most prominent lawyers, and has taken up numerous high-profile cases.
The veteran politician's political career began in 1970, and four years later, he won a seat in the Kedah legislative assembly.
Karpal was first elected to Parliament in 1978 as the representative for Jelutong, Penang, which he held for more than 20 years until losing it in 1999.
The Tiger of Jelutong came back to Parliament in the next general election in 2004, and subsequently led DAP to its strongest ever performance in the 12th general elections in 2008.
A 2005 motor vehicle accident left Karpal wheelchair-bound.
